Advisory council members sought for marine sanctuary

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is seeking to fill eight primary and nine alternate seats on its advisory council, which ensures public input into sanctuary matters and provides advice to the sanctuary management.

Applications are being accepted through June 30 for the following seats: Native Hawaiian, Fishing, Education, Research, Hawaii County, Kauai County, Maui County, Honolulu County, Commercial Shipping and Youth.

Candidates are selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying, community and professional affiliations, and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources.

Permaculture workshop scheduled for May 19

One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau will hold an introduction to permaculture workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 19. Participants will learn about the self-reliance principles of permaculture and see them applied on two farms.

AARP driving classes slated for May 21, 22

Kona Community School for Adults is sponsoring two AARP Driver Safety Classes at the Kona Palisades Recreation Center located on Kaiminani Drive at the foot of Kona Palisades Subdivision. The one-day, four-hour classes begin at 1 p.m. May 21 and 22. These classroom refresher courses will cover topics including defensive driving tactics, dealing with road rage and how to adjust to age-related changes. There are no driving or written tests.

Participants with Hartford Insurance may receive as much as a 10 percent discount on automobile insurance upon completion of the course. Other companies may offer a similar discount.

The course costs $12 for AARP members; $14 for nonmembers. Early registration is recommended.

Weaving classes offered May 19 and 26

Joan Namkoong will lead two weaving classes at Island Yarn and Art Supplies. Namkoong has more than 20 years of weaving experience, mostly with silk and linen. She is a member of the Hawaii Handweavers Hui.

Participants in the first class, “Intro to Weaving,” will explore several different weave structures, including tabby, basket weave, twill and double weave. Participants may choose to attend this one-session class either May 19 or 26. The class runs from noon to 3 p.m. both days and costs $30 including materials.

Namkoong’s other class, “Beginning Weaving,” is designed to teach participants how to set up a project on a loom and covers warping, weaving, finishing and basic weaving techniques. Students in this two-day class will take home a finished project. The class is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 19 and 26 and costs $100, including materials.
